Paramount+ in July is an interesting beast. It’s got It’s Pony Season 1 relisted from February no-show. It’s got South Park: The Streaming Wars Part 2 for people looking for a hot new original. Other than that, it continues the extremely weird habit we’ve noticed of primarily adding… Awesomeness TV library. Yeah, we don’t get it. At all. They have iconic brands like Nickelodeon, MTV, VH1, Comedy Central… but every month they pour in random Awesomeness TV titles that are already streaming on Netflix and Hulu. On top of that, these Awesomeness TV titles are not leaving the other services, so they were non-exclusive.
Paramount+ Library Woes
Paramount+ struggles to justify its existence for us as it seems like a lot of their content is available elsewhere because of their odd strategy. We would prefer they were purchased by Netflix and continued to produce originals like this month’s staff pick Honor Society (we love Angourie Rice) for Netflix. If they folded the entire Showtime library into Paramount+ at no extra cost we’d be singing a different tune, but that’s only allowed internationally, we guess.
On June 30th, one of the most binged shows in streaming left Netflix and went to Hulu on July 1st. We’re talking about Criminal Minds seasons 1-12. Hulu already had seasons 13-15. Why would Paramount+ let a competitor stream their biggest show (alongside NCIS, which also has many seasons co-streaming between Netflix while Paramount+ houses the full set) in most year’s year-end Nielsen charts? It could be because Disney has international distribution rights or even part of a deal to co-stream the Indiana Jones series next year between Disney+ and Paramount+, but that’s wild speculation. We would have limited Hulu to Seasons 1-5 or nothing at all.
Speaking of Hulu, a ton of classic content left in June but is not coming to Paramount+ in July. Yikes. Why do they do this? Echoes of Disney nonsensically removing a bunch of content from Netflix March 1st that they still haven’t added to Disney+ (The BFG, Hulk: Where Monsters Dwell, Tini, etc). The following CBS-owned films, specials, and series left Hulu in June, but headed straight for the Paramount Vault: Snoopy Come Home, A Boy Named Charlie Brown, The Cat in the Hat (1971), The Lorax (1972) Dr. Seuss on the Loose, A Very Brady Christmas, and Sabrina Down Under. The Peanuts and Dr. Seuss titles would have been pretty logical additions for their children’s library. However, we’re definitely the most surprised to see them allow Sabrina’s film to lapse since they already stream the series. Paramount+ content team does some weird stuff…
And while it’s awesome to see It’s Pony re-listed from its February no-show, what about the many no-shows from the 2nd half of 2021 that have yet to surface: Cousins For Life, 100 Things To Do Before High School, Keep It Spotless, Jagger Eaton’s Mega Life, Webheads, and See Dad Run. What about the many shows from 2018-2020 that they still have not added such as The Substitute, Unleashed, Unfiltered, Star Falls, Drama Club, The Astronauts, The Barbarian And The Troll, Side Hustle, and Group Chat?
